Comic Book Review: Cryptid Hacker Force

These Sneaky Folks are the Reason Your Cryptid Pictures are Blurry

Ever wonder why there’s never been a clear, convincing, real picture of the many cryptids that supposedly exist in the world? Bigfoot. Nessie. The Jersey Devil. The Bunnyman. The good folks over at Green Archer Comics have the answer. It’s The Cryptid Hacker Force!

The comic starts with the Loch Ness Monster (once again) showing up where a boat of tourists can clearly see her and snap pictures on their phones. That sets off the emergency alarm for the hacker force. Bigfoot, Aikaterene, Eoghan, and Kuchisake-Onna wipe the images from the phones and the network. However, one phone evades the digital snakes deployed by the team.

The phone’s owner is a bit of a pain but eventually comes around with some coercing. The cryptids report back to the council that funds them. These various cameos are a subtle way to plant the seeds for future issues. Things take a dark turn when it appears that the council itself has been hacked. The hacker force is the last chance to stop the mysterious stranger.

Illustrated by Kieran Squires, lettering by Dan Butcher, edited by Eli Ramirez, and written by Allan Liska, issue #1 is a great introduction to the bizarre team and their mission. They inject tons of personality into the various characters. Nessie is a diva. Bigfoot is a brute. The revenant is always nervous. The gorgon holds a grudge.

Cryptid Hacker Force feels fresh. It’s a great premise and issue #1 sets up a ton of future plot options. I’m interested to see just how deep this group of comic creators delve into their excellent combination of ridiculousness and mystery.

The team over at Green Archer Comics is super ambitious. They have a number of original projects like The Press Guardian and have taken the dive into public domain with series like Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar. This character originally appeared on radio from 1949-1962, with stars like Dick Powell and Bob Bailey in the title role. Green Archer has converted him from an insurance investigator to a cyber insurance investigator, fitting modern times while keeping the noir flare.
